  2. History/Field • In 1970, the Japanese conducted a study to compare lip prints • A second study was done in 1991 • The study of lip prints is called cheiloscopy

  3. Lip prints • Lips, like fingers, have special features that belong only to the individual making the print • No two lip prints are exactly the same so a print can be used to identify an individual

  4. Collecting lip prints • Talcum powder is placed near the print • The powder is then brushed in both directions over the print with a soft brush • After the print is photographed, clear tape can be used to “lift” the print

  5. Common lip patterns • There are 5 common lip patterns: • Short vertical lines • Long vertical lines • Rectangular lines that may crisscross • Lines that form diamond patterns • Branching lines
