A carbon footprint is an amount of Green Houses Gases that are emitted from an individual, such as yourself, an organization or product. Almost everything you do adds to the pollution of Earth, increasing the size of your carbon footprint from turning on the lights to driving to work.
Automobiles are one of the biggest contributors to a carbon footprint. Burning single tank of gas can produce up to 10 tons of CO2 emissions. For the average person it makes up about half of our carbon footprint. How to reduce your automotive CO2 emissions. Ride your bike or walk to any close destinations. Purchase a hybrid or a high fuel efficiency vehicle. Try to minimize idling time- turn your car off if your going to be sitting for awhile. Use the air conditioner rather than opening the windows. Opening windows allows unwanted drag to resist car movement forcing the engine to work harder which means more gas is used. Don’t hit the gas so hard to accelerate but ease onto the pedal. Making the car accelerate faster than necessary will burn gas faster. Try to coast whenever possible and keep your tires properly inflated.
Electricity Believe it or not, turning on the computer at home will definetly add to your carbon footprint. Electricity usage is about 15 % of a family’s carbon output, so be sure to turn off appliances and completely unplug anything that requires a wall box. For example, cell phone chargers will use electricity even when they are not charging your phone. These products are called Ghost Loads. Be sure to turn off and unplug unused appliances.
Water usage contributes greatly to carbon pollution, since most water we use is treated and cleaned so that its drinkable again. The process can increase your carbon footprint a lot. Reducing water consumption Use less water – just turning off your water while brushing your teeth or using an energy star dishwasher instead of hand washing your dishes can save 10 gallons or more! Check for leaks in pipes and especially your toilet. Put food coloring in the toilet tank and if the water clears within 30 minutes then you have a leak. Repair dripping faucets by replacing a single washer. A leaky faucet can waste 2,700 gallons a year if it leaks one drop per second. Install a faucet aerators which reduce the flow of water by 50%. Aerators add bubbles to the water to make the water seem more voluminous.
