Spatial Data Available from Iowa DOT and Iowa DOT Infrastructure April 11, 2006 HEEP Conference
What is Spatial Data • Location or position in nature • Graphically represented as points, lines, polygons, routes and raster images • Examples: • SW abutment of Structure Number 182350 • Sign needing repair is located at Reference Post 56.4 on US 65 with an offset of 40’ from centerline
What is GIS • Collection of computer software, hardware, data and personnel used to manipulate, analyze and present information that is tied to a spatial location relative to the earth • Example: • I want to see SI&A data of all structures in District 1 on US Routes in a map with aerial photography and current resurfacing projects. • Create a report of all Interstate locations where pavement condition is equal to X , traffic is above 15,000 AADT and has 1 or more fatal crashes
GIS InfrastructureHardware & Software • 2 production & 3 test Oracle Spatial Databases • Storage of geometry and business data • TerraShare Server • Spool images to Iowa DOT users • 2 terabytes of imagery • 120+ seats of TerraShare Client • 25+ copies of GeoMedia Professional • 80+ copies of GeoMedia • 6+ ArcMap • 3 ArcGIS • External Web Server • Internal Web Portal using GeoMedia Web Map (CTAMSWEB)
GIS InfrastructureStaff • 3 full time and 1 part time IT positions • Technical Lead • Programmer • GIS and Image expert • Office GIS Experts • Soils • Environmental • Transportation Data • Many Others … • Leverage Skills • Systems and Staff are “loosely coupled”
Enterprise Spatial Data • Oracle Spatial • Business data stored in Oracle, Access or SQL Server • Transformations to LRS are stored in DSE or other Oracle Databases • ESRI clients need to export/import enterprise data to Oracle Spatial. • GeoMedia reads Oracle Spatial natively
What’s in Iowa’s Oracle Spatial Database? • Road Centerlines, structures & rail crossings (GIMS) – Transportation Data • Airports & Heliports – Aviation • DOT building locations – Facilities • Five Year Program - Program Management • Trails – Systems Planning • Boundary Data (corp. lines, county borders, rivers, districts border, RPA, MPO, etc.)
Future Additions • Culvert Inventory for District 1 • Snow Fences • Snow Plow Routes • Runway PCI • ROW Parcels • Sign Inventory

http://www.gis.dot.state.ia.us/ • Download road centerlines, boundaries, airports, heliports, trails, LRS Centerlines and Georeferenced H&T TIFFs • Core DOT site for downloading GIS data • 1GB of download traffic monthly
http://CTAMSWEB • Intranet Web Portal • Used to query data in Decision Support Environment (Traffic, Pavement Management, Roadway data) • Developed by GeoDecisions
http://www.iowadotmaps.com • State, County and City Maps • Traffic Maps
http://ia.gisinventory.net/?set_group=cadastral • Interactive way to get DOT GIS data • Other data is available from multiple sources • Private • Local governments • Universities
http://ortho.gis.iastate.edu/ • Various images from ISU GIS Facility Iowa DOT has state wide 2002 Color Infrared plus updated city and county imagery.
