Gaza Strip Khan Younis Governorate Empowered lives. Resilient nations.
Brief Background Empowered lives. Resilient nations. 30,000 cesspits exist, Evacuated weekly or monthly costing ≈ 50-100USD/month 90% of water wells in KY don’t meet WHO quality standards. KY City is the second largest city in the Gaza Strip, Total Population 195,000 capita. KY Governorate consists of 7 Municipalities; Total Population 295, 000 capita.
Brief Background Empowered lives. Resilient nations. Currently around 60% of population is sewer connected. Nitrate levels in water wells: 220 mg/L in average. 458 mg/L in few wells. 50 mg/L as WHO Std. Raw sewage collected in temporary lagoons. In 2004 UNDP &PWA provided design for a WW collection system in KY as part of USD 7.8 M storm water project.

The prevalence of water born diseases such as, diarrheas, dysenteries, salmoellosis, hepatitis A, typhoid, guardian and amoeba histolytica in Khan Younis city is considered to be one of the highest among the Gaza Strip. Impacts on Population Health Empowered lives. Resilient nations. • Prevalence of Methemoglobinemia Blue Babies; In a Al- Mawasi area, water analysis of agricultural water wells showed high and serious biological contamination. Some samples showed that the Fecal coli-form and Total coli-form are too numerous to count; 4,800 cases of water born diseases were admitted in UNRWA clinics in 2009. 9 / KY WWTP

Therefore KY WWTP Project is considered: A Strategic Environmental and Infrastructural Project & a Vital Need for Khan Younis Residents Empowered lives. Resilient nations.
Project Objectives Empowered lives. Resilient nations. • Protect public health and improve the environmental conditions of Khan Younis residents; • Control pollution of the coastal aquifer and protect the limited water resources; • Provide new water source of treated waste water by recharging 9.7 MCM/year into aquifer. Irrigation scheme will be developed with PWA and MoA; • Improve socio-economic conditions and promote dignified livelihoods of Khan Younis residents.

Implementation Needs Press for detail Press for detail Press for detail Empowered lives. Resilient nations. • Close coordination between all parties. • Project management team. • Construction supervision team. • Israeli Approval for the implementation of KY WWTP. • Access of construction materials. • Security coordination to access KY WWTP eastern site. • Land availability for the infiltration basins. • Provision of electrical energy to operate the plant.
Object of some Al Fukhari Residents to construct the infiltration basins Difficulties in access of required construction materials Coordination with the Israeli authorities. Contingency plan to access materials to be developed. Enhance community participation, Coordinate with counterparts for advance public awareness . • Risks PWA, CMWU and Khan Younis Municipality are not able to acquire the land for infiltration. Shortage of available fund to cover construction works Coordination with counterparts and concerned authorities to accelerate land acquisition . Coordination with donors and counterparts.
Restriction on mobility of international & local staff due to security situation. Fuel shortage and regular electricity cut. Alternative fuel and electrical source to be provided by contractor and counterparts. Coordination with UNDSS, Provide security update on daily basis for all staff. • Risks GEDCO is not able to provide the required electrical power.
