Pennsylvania’s State Nickname’’ The Keystone State’’By: Maria Corradini • Pennsylvania has been called Keystone State since 1802. • A keystone is an important part of an arch that locks all the other pieces of the arch in place. • When the PA delegates couldn’t pick a nickname for the state the final vote fell down to John Morton, who picked independence. This was known as the keystone vote; the supporting vote for the government. Also when the government was moved to Washington DC, a bridge was built. Which is known as the Pennsylvania Avenue Bridge. PA’s initials were carved into the keystone arch supporting the bridge.
