What is Prejudice? • Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary2 a (1) :preconceived judgment or opinion (2) :an adverse opinion or leaning formed without just grounds or before sufficient knowledge. • Examples of #1? • Examples of #2?
Prejudice Towards the Truth • We read of many in the Bible who had preconceived notions w/o investigation about the truth. • Acts 13:44-46 (NKJV)44 On the next Sabbath almost the whole city came together to hear the word of God. 45 But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy; and contradicting and blaspheming, they opposed the things spoken by Paul. 46 Then Paul and Barnabas grew bold and said, “It was necessary that the word of God should be spoken to you first; but since you reject it, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, behold, we turn to the Gentiles.
Prejudice Towards the Truth • Bereans were not prejudiced against the truth. • Acts 17:11-12 (NKJV)11 These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so. 12 Therefore many of them believed, and also not a few of the Greeks, prominent women as well as men.
Prejudice Towards the Truth • Many today in the church have a prejudiced view of the truth. • Matthew 19:9 (NKJV)9 And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is divorced commits adultery.”
Prejudice Towards the Truth • Think about the sign on the building. • Romans 16:16 (NKJV)16 Greet one another with a holy kiss. The churches of Christ greet you. • 2 Corinthians 1:1 (NKJV)1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, To the church of God which is at Corinth, with all the saints who are in all Achaia: • “Christians Meet Here” “The Lord’s Church” “The Church in Podunk”
Prejudice Towards the Truth • Many are afraid to even bring such a topic up due to the prejudice that exists. • Young lady lamented in Fla. that she questioned the preacher about this sign thing. • He preached on the subject (all but mentioning her by name) and suggested that people who suggest this are false teachers.
Prejudice Towards the Truth • Matthew 7:15-16 (NKJV)15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. 16 You will know them by their fruits. • This label does not describe those who would save their judgments or opinions until after hearing evidence! • “The honest man altars his opinions to fit the truth, whereas a prejudiced man altars the truth to fit his opinion.” Winkler
How To Overcome • John 8:32 (NKJV)32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” • James 1:18 (NKJV)18 Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures. • 1 Peter 1:22 (NKJV)22 Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart,
How To Overcome • 1 Peter 1:23 (NKJV)23 having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever,… • Romans 2:2 (NKJV)2 But we know that the judgment of God is according to truth against those who practice such things.
Prejudice Towards Other People • Nathaniel • John 1:46 (NKJV)46 And Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” • We need to avoid prejudging people. • Certain preacher, certain elder, teacher, neighbor.
Pharisee • Luke 18:9-14 (NKJV)9 Also He spoke this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: 10 “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, ‘God, I thank You that I am not like other men—extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I possess.’ 13 And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me a sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”
Prejudice Towards Other People • Areas where we can be prejudiced! • People from other races. • Intellectual levels (snobbish). • Financial status (greedy, dishonest). • Occupational pursuits (lawyers, politicians). • Other ages (young people vs. elderly).
How To Overcome • 1 Timothy 2:6 (NKJV)6 who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time, • Matthew 28:18-20 (NKJV)18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
Galatians 3:28 (NKJV)28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. • Acts 10:34-35 (NKJV)34 Then Peter opened his mouth and said: “In truth I perceive that God shows no partiality. 35 But in every nation whoever fears Him and works righteousness is accepted by Him. • 1 Samuel 16:7 (NKJV)7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
Prejudice Towards Ideas • We can be so set in our ways of doing things that we are antagonistically opposed to any new idea, expedient or method, though scriptural, which would implement and expedite the Lord’s work. • Any examples? • Technology…
Prejudice Towards Ideas • Funny, we are not that way in life! • Who wants to go back to former times! My grandfather always said, “Who told you the good old days were so good.” • Tractor should did help him out!
How To Overcome • Cultivate this attitude! • If the thing is scriptural (command, example or inference) and it expedites the Lord’s work, I’m all for it!
