Modernized Utility Grid Expand and upgrade transmission corridors Efficient siting and permitting Consistent interconnection rules Standardized metering policies Internet based building control systems Action Plan Recommendations Recognize energy efficiency as a high-priority energy resource. Make strong, long-term commitment to implement cost effective energy efficiency as a resource. Broadly communicate the benefits of and opportunities for energy efficiency. Promote sufficient, timely, and stable program funding to deliver energy efficiency where cost-effective. Modify policies to align utility incentives with the delivery of cost-effective energy efficiency and modify ratemaking practices to promote energy efficiency investments. Getting to our goals

GREENBUILDINGMajor present conditions & future predictions • In the US 70% of all electricity is used for building conditioning & equipment • Best building design engineering construction and operational practices demonstrate the feasibility of operating buildings at 1/10th of the energy required by average US practices with higher IEQ • Net zero energy buildings for the majority of the building stock, including low to medium size housing and commercial buildings are feasible now, when economic externalities in the cost of energy are included • Retrofitting existing buildings, it has been demonstrated, will save more than 2/3 thirds of the energy needed for operating them, while increasing thermal comfort, visual, air, and acoustic quality (IEQ)
In a newly released report by the New Buildings Institute, 30% of LEED buildings perform better than the simulated level, 25% perform worse than expected, and some have serious energy consumption problems during post-occupancy (Turner et al., 2008). Worldwide US Green Building Export Initiative • The U.S. Departments of State and Commerce joint initiative of League of Green Embassies and Green Build USAunder the National Export Initiative. • The League of Green Embassies is a voluntary association of over fifty embassies and consulates that work together to promote energy efficiency at embassy facilities. • Green Build USA is a Department of Commerce program that promotes the export of U.S.-sourced green building products and promotes the use of these products by hosting embassy commercial events. The joint program offers an unprecedented opportunity to: • U.S. private sector companies working in the clean energy, green building sectors to expand exports directly or by placing product or services into U.S. embassies. Embassies are ideal venues to: • Showcase U.S. leadership by highlighting U.S. products, services and technologies that address today’s environmental challenges; • Enable US companies to sell “over the fence” into local markets. page 1 of 2
Three key goals of the League of Green Embassies Program are: • to advance the presidential mandate to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in USG buildings; • demonstrate the capabilities of U.S. products and technologies to the world market • increase the exports of U.S. products and services in line with the National Export Initiative.
