History of MSMC • Private, Catholic, Women’s* college • Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet • Missions: Educating students to make a difference and serve their community • Two exceptional campuses -Chalon est. 1925 -Doheny est.1962 * Women are admissable to all majors. Men are only admissable to Mount St. Mary’s as Nursing and Music majors.

  3. Philosophy of MSMC MSMC is the Catholic, Women’s college, with a few good men, in the West that specializes in a value-based, liberal arts, nursing education, where our students are encouraged to explore ideas and define their values to better lead and serve their communities.

Two Campuses one Mission • Chalon- campus sits within the Santa Monica mountains, and houses; -Baccalaureate degree programs -Weekend College • Doheny- campus is located near Downtown Los Angeles, once the historic Doheny Estate houses; - Associate degree programs - A.D.N - Master’s programs - MSN - Teacher’s credential - DPT

Application Process • Accelerated BSN • Application Form • Personal statement • Two Letters of References • One must be academic and the other must be academic or professional • Recommendation letters must be on institutional letterhead (not on the nursing reference form) • Official college transcripts (from every college attended) • GPA- 3.0 Cumulative • Application Fee $20- online application Please note: we only accept on-line applications for this program. The application will be available beginning May 1, 2007.

  7. International Transcripts • If you attended college outside the United States, you will need to submit a transcript evaluation along with your transcript. • The recommended evaluation service is Academic Credentials Evaluation Institute www.acei1.com 800-234-1597

Transcripts • We will need official transcripts from all the colleges that you have attended, including: • Community college/ University attended before your degree • University where you obtained your degree • Foreign transcripts from study-abroad program • Official Transcripts from all foreign study • Transcripts from Graduate or Professional degree • Transcripts from vocational program I.e. C.N.A, Massage, Phlebotomy, E.M.T • Community college/ University attended after degree • Transcripts for courses taken prior to application deadline

  9. Application Deadline • November 1, 2007 for May 2008 term • You may apply even if you are in the process of completing pre-requisites. However, all pre-requisites must be completed by the May 12, 2008 start date of the Accelerated BSN Program.

ROY ADAPTATION MODEL • Developed by Sister Callista Roy CSJ, former chair of MSMC nursing department. • Used widely in the United States, Canada, Japan, and other countries. • The Roy adaptation model recognizes that a person is a bio-psycho-social-spiritual being in constant interaction with a dynamic and complex world.

  11. Purpose of BSN • Develop critical thinking • Ethical judgment • Personal sensitivity • Capacity for leadership • Eligibility for licensing exam • Eligibility for California Public Health Certificate

THREE NURSING PROGRAMS • DOHENY • Associate Degree in Nursing – 2 to 3 years • Schedule: • Classes in the afternoon or evening • Clinical experiences on weekends • Pre-requisite: College Chemistry (with lab), English 1A, & General Psychology • GPA minimums: 2.5 overall and 2.5 science • Starts in Fall and Spring of each year

  13. THREE NURSING PROGRAMS • CHALON • Traditional BSN Program- 3 to 4 years • Classes and Clinicals during daytime hours • 32 units of pre-requisites • Overall GPA of 2.7 or greater • Science GPA of 2.5 • Starts Fall of each year • RN to BSN program (1- 2 years)

  14. THREE NURSING PROGRAMS • DOHENY • Accelerated BSN Program – 12 months • Must have Bachelors Degree • 46 units of pre-requisite courses • Overall GPA of 3.0 or greater • Starts May of each year

REQUIREMENTS • Admission Requirements: • Grade of “C” or better in required classes • Nursing Math Exam (84%) • Entrance Requirements: • Critical Thinking Test • American Heart Association CPR card • Annual PE, PPD, 2 MMR, TB, 3 Hep B & Titer, Varicella Titer, Polio Series • Auto, Driver’s License, Auto Insurance • Malpractice Insurance ($20/yearly) • Background Check

Accelerated Nursing ProgramPre Requisites To Be Completed Prior To The Start Date Of The Program • Chemistry or Physics* 3-4 Units • Human Anatomy (with lab)* 4 units • Human Physiology (with Lab)* 4 units • Microbiology (with lab)* 4 units • Human Nutrition 3 units • General Psychology 3 units • Developmental (lifespan) Psychology 3 units • Intro to Sociology or Cultural Anthropology 3 units • Written Communication 3 units • Oral Communication 3 units • Philosophy 3 units • Bioethics (must be upper-division class)** 3 units • Religious Studies 6 units * Indicates courses that must be taken within the past 5 years. **Indicates course that may be taken concurrently with the program

Program Format • Summer - Chalon campus • Classes- Mondays and Tuesdays from 7am – 3:30pm • Clinicals- Wednesdays- Fridays from 7am – 3:30pm • Students take 20 units • Fall – Doheny campus • Classes- Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7am- 4pm • Clinicals- Friday and Saturday OR Saturday and Sunday from 7am- 4pm • Students take 18 Nursing Units • Those that need Bioethics, take it on Tuesdays from 5pm – 8pm. • Spring –Doheny campus • Classes – Mondays and Wednesdays from 7am- 4pm • Clinicals- Thursday and Friday OR Saturday and Sunday from 7am- 4pm • Students take 18 units

  25. Types of Financial Aid • Federal Stafford Loans • Total amount of $21,000 for the program. Repayment begins six months after graduation • Federal Subsidized Loans: Federal government pays the interest while you are in college. Summer: up to $5500 Fall/ Spring: up to $5500 • Federal Unsubsidized Loans- Interest accrues while student is in the program. Summer: up to $5000 Fall/ Spring: up to $5000 • Alternative/Private Loans • Supplemental educational financing: These private loans are based on credit. The student has option to apply with a co-signer. Repayment occurs six months after graduation. • Kaiser Scholarship: Loan Forgivable Program • Students must first be accepted into the Accelerated BSN program in order to be eligible to apply for this scholarship. • Student must complete an for the Kaiser Scholarship and then an interview will be set up by Kaiser. If you accept the scholarship and work for Kaiser two years once you graduate, the loan or “scholarship” is forgiven and loan would not have to be paid back.
