Catalyst • Classify as a compound, mixture, or element: • 1. 3. • 2. 4.
Physical Properties A physical property is a property that can be determined without changing the nature of the substance ex: color, hardness, density, state (solid, liquid, or gas) What are some physical properties of cheese?
Chemical Properties A chemical property describes a substance’s ability to participate in chemical reactions Ex: ability to rust, burn, produce gas • We can determine a chemical property only when the substance is undergoing a change in composition. Ex: rusting you can only tell that a substance has this chemical property once you expose it to oxygen for a prolonged period of time
Physical or Chemical Property? • Iron rusts. • Plants are green. • Your body temperature is 98.6 degrees F. • Plants produce oxygen from carbon dioxide.
Physical Changes Physical change: a change in which the identity of the substance does not change. Ex: Phase changes (solid to liquid to gas)
Physical Changes In a physical change, the arrangement, location, and speed of he particles may change. Check for understanding: How do the water molecules change arrangement and speed when water goes from a liquid to a gas?
Physical Changes Some more examples: -dissolving -tearing -melting -freezing -condensing
Physical Changes Physical changes are usually reversible. You can go back to whatever you started with after a physical change!! Ex: Dissolving sugar into water is a physical change. If we get creative, we can heat up the mixture to evaporate the water and separate it from the sugar.
Chemical Changes Chemical changes involve the creation of a new substance. Evidence that a chemical change occurred: • a gas is produced • color change • an odor is produced • light is produced • the temperature changes without heating or cooling
Chemical Change Some examples: -spoiled milk -burning -rusting
Chemical Changes A chemical change is IRREVERSIBLE. You cannot go back to what you started with!
Practice! Identify these as physical or chemical changes. • Frozen popsicle Melted popsicle • Raw meat cooked meat • Unused charcoal lit charcoal • Intact paper plate torn paper plate • Making salt water • Lighting Sparkers
Exit Slip! Identify the following as a chemical or physical property: 1. Water is a liquid 2. Gasoline is flammable Identify the following as a chemical or physical change: 3. A candle burning 4. A rock being crushed 5. Bread molding
