  2. Whatis questioning the text? • The act of asking questions of and about the text WHILE reading • A few levels of questions

  3. Why is questioning important? • If we are fake reading, this strategy forces our brains to re-engage. • It allows us to connect with the text on many different levels.

  4. How do we question the text? • While reading actively…. • Stop often to question the text. • After paragraphs. • After sections / chapters.

  5. For Non-Fiction • “Reading to learn” • Do I FULLY understand this concept? • Could I APPLY it to something new? • WHY did this fact come about? • What is the NEXT STEP for this fact? • How does this MATTER beyond just this reading? • Can I APPLY it to something new?

  6. Levels of Questions • Here’s what we call ‘em…. • Level 1 • Level 2 • Level 3 • Creative, eh?

  7. Level 1 • Can be answered by looking for facts contained in the text. • Can be answered by looking in other resources. • Literal (Snorkeling) level. • Reading the lines.

  9. Cinderella • From what object does the Fairy Godmother use to create the coach? • What is Cinderella’s deadline for leaving the ball? • What does Cinderella drop while fleeing from the ball?

  10. Level 2 • Require some analysis of the text or parts of that text. • Must look in many areas of the text and piece items together to respond to this type. • Interpretive (Scuba) level • Reading between the lines

  11. Interpretation and analysis needed to offer a valid response.

  12. Cinderella • How is Cinderella similar to and different from her step-sisters? • Why does the stepmother treat Cinderella so poorly? • Does Cinderella get what she deserves in the end? Do the stepsisters?

  13. Level 3 • Are open-ended. • Reading BEYOND the lines. • Spark more discussion about abstract ideas or issues. • Draw on a theme or message from the text and ask deep questions about that.

  14. More UNIVERSAL / THEMATIC issue that is raised by the text.

  15. Cinderella • What is the nature of true love? • Is there such a thing as “happily ever after?” • How might the merging of families be made easier?

  16. Non-Fiction: Level 1 • What does this word mean? • How old does one have to be to become a Senator? Congressman? • How are the numbers for states’ Representatives figured?

  17. Non-Fiction: Level 2 • How does the power of large population states compare to that of small population states in the Senate? • How does the law-making process hinge upon the House and the Senate working together?

  18. Non-fiction: Level 3 • How do migration patterns of Americans connect to the House of Representatives? • How might legal immigration have an impact on Congress and the laws it attempts to pass? • How might the recent government shutdown reflect upon the upcoming elections where Tea Party members’ seats are up for re-election?
