Stat 135 Lab 5 Learning Objective #26 TA: Dongmei Li
A one sentence definition for each of the three words • Reliability • The variability in measurements • Bias • Consistent error in one direction • Validity • Addressing the right issue
Lab 5 Learning Objective • 26. The reliability of a measurement is seen in the variability of independently repeated measurements.
Some other important points • 21. The question of validity must always be addressed – it's often difficult to measure the variable of interest. • 22. Measurements will vary when repeated. • 23. The average of several measurements is less variable than a single measurement. • 24. Understand the difference between validity, reliability, and bias in a measurement situation. • 25. To improve bias, the experimenter must improve the measuring instrument. • 27. Repeated measurements can not help you judge the level of bias – for that you need an external standard.
