  4. A. Hoover’s Failures • Hands down approach to the economy. • Rugged Individualism: Help yourself/no hand outs/lazy. • Trickle Down Economy: Help they rich and they will eventually help the rest. • All lead to a deeper economic depression.

  5. B. Franklin Delano Roosevelt • Born into the upper-class (rich). • Went to the best schools. • Had a successful political career. • Polio made him handicap as an adult (could not walk).

  6. C. The New Deal • Pledge Americans a “New Deal” • Gov. will provide relief to the people. • Gov. will help the nation recover. • Beat Hoover in the election by a landslide.

  7. D. Winning Team • FDR selected key people to help him implement the “New Deal” • He picked the smartest people he could find. • They were called the “Brain Trust”.

  8. Application Suppose you were living in the U.S. during the Great Depression. Consider the problems and fears of the people. Write President Roosevelt a 3 paragraph letter expressing your concerns and what you hope he accomplishes during his presidential term.
