Excellent university needs excellent library and excellent librarians. How’s the Library staff status?
Staff strengths now • Very good performance • Loyal and committed to the Library • Self motivated • More than 10 years library experience • Some collaboration exercises • Good at cataloguing Atlantisian materials
Staff weaknesses now • Unable to use computer or internet • Grasp no foreign languages • Zero or little awareness of the ‘outside’ world, including what goes on in other libraries • No or little experience of change

Mission for the next 3 years • Revitalize the staffing of AUL for the next generation library within 3 years • Develop AUL staffs in main areas of capabilities expected of a modern librarian/information professional
Key goals within next 3 years • General skills • Language • Technology • Professional expertises • Research support • User needs • Staff career development • 3-year improvement plan
Goals for 1styear • Improve staffs’ capabilities on foreign language and modern IT technology • 3-year improvement program • Gradually improve staff composition • Recruit 2 new professional librarians each year • Sustained training programs
Objectives on developing workforce • Introduce training programs • Identify ‘ambassadors’ or ‘mentors’ to facilitate continuous coaching within workforce • Set up an exchange initiative
Objectives on language • Recruit a library professional with language abilities to work with language expert to devise a language training program for staff • Recruit volunteers from foreign language department students • Priority language – English (increase of English collection) • Target – minimum- able to serve English speaking users and retrieve required items.
Objectives on technology • Recruit a library professional with IT technology abilities to work with technology expert to devise a technology training program for staff • Identify technological knowledge gaps • Improve IT equipment • Train the trainers initiative – overview of technology development in the academic library field - learn how to use current and gradually new technologies over 3 years
Goals for 2ndyear • Research support for faculty and students • Satisfy user’s needs • Achieve awareness of current professional requirements • Continue with Language and Technology training (see 1st year objectives)
Objectives • Attract librarians from other libraries, usually more modern ones to visit AUL, who shall help to improve staffs’ professional abilities • Expertise in atlantisian materials- use this to steer training incentives • Send staff to other foreign libraries to learn new skills and bring back experience and insight • Keep training programs on improving staffs’ professional expertises

Allocation of additional funding • 1/3 on recruit • Recruit 2 new librarian professional with language/technology capabilities each year • 1/6 on exchange initiative • 1/6 on special equipment update • 1/3 on training programs • General skills • Professional expertises
