Annotated bibliography • Summarizes critical points of current knowledge pertinent to your object of study: • significant discussions, • historical and current context • theoretical and methodological approaches • Cites scholarly articles, books, book chapters and relevant non-scholarly sources (e.g. reviews, interviews, exhibition catalogues) • Your annotation will provide context / justification for selecting specific texts. • Identify the discipline, place, time, perspective of writer (may require additional research), as well as their argument • Summarize relevant aspects of the text, identify points of difference, state how it will be useful for your research

  3. Purpose of literature reviews • Place one's original work in the context of existing literature • Identify areas of prior scholarship to prevent duplication of effort • Point the way forward for further research • Places each work within the context of its contribution to the understanding of the subject under review • Identify new ways to interpret, and gaps in, previous research • Describe the relationship of each work to the others under consideration • Addresses conflicts amongst seemingly contradictory previous studies

  4. Process • Define your topic, the scope and research questions pertaining to your topic • Search for materials: use search tools to find materials about your topic • Read and evaluate what you have found in order to select material that makes a significant contribution to the understanding of the topic

  5. Research question case studies • Andrew: How to conduct an exhaustive search, beyond the SFU Library? What about German language indexes? • Rebecca: What about including non-scholarly sources, e.g. books by practitioners, critics? • Carolina: What are the criteria for selecting books and articles?

  6. Key tools • FPA 812 research guide • Library catalogue • Beyond SFU: WorldCat • Interlibrary loan, reciprocal borrowing privileges • Article indexes • subject specific • cross-disciplinary • Digital dissertations • Citation searching, e.g. Google Scholar • Manage your information, e.g. RefWorks
