Location: AMK 232 Coffee Shop Date and time when picture (right) was taken: 10th June, 8.18a.m. The coffee shop (Kopitiam @AMK 232) is located at Ang MohKio Avenue 3, Block 232, Singapore 560232. There are many tables and chairs as well as about 8 stalls in the coffee shop. They made use of not only the area sheltered by the HDB block, but also the outdoor area a little outside the block by placing a waterproof cover over it. This helps minimise space constraints and the tables outdoors also provide more ventilation and a cooler environment due to it being further away from the crowded stalls.   4. The area is naturally kept cool by the frequent winds that blow into the coffee shop due to the open-space layout of the coffee shop. The coffee shop had been renovated about 5-6 years before to make space for more stalls. Location: AMK 232 Food court Date and time when picture (above) was taken: 11th June, 8.24a.m. It is most populated during lunch and dinnertime by people of all ages, especially frequent patrons such as old folks and construction workers. Location: AMK 232 Coffee Shop Date and time when picture (left) was taken: 10th June, 8.26a.m. Location: AMK 232 Coffee Shop Date and time when picture (below) was taken: 17th June, 12.33p.m. The coffee shop is accessible to them as compared to an alternative eateries, such as the nearby market, as the coffee shop is situated underneath a HDB flat, in a residential area. Other than eating, people chat, bond with their families and friends over their food, and form friendships with neighbours here.

Location: Ang Mo Kio Community Centre Date and time when picture (left) was taken: 10 June, 9.06 a.m. The Ang Mo Kio Community Centre is very large and includes a basketball court, hall, childcare centre and many more. The concert hall which includes a stage, is very spacious and is about 250m2. Location: Ang Mo Kio Community Centre Date and time when picture (left) was taken: 10th June, 9.12a.m.

  7. Location: Ang Mo Kio Community Centre Date and time when picture (left) was taken: 10th June, 9.15a.m. The most populated time depends in the different activities held at different times. During the weekends, there are more activities held, and during weekdays the most populated time is 4 to 5pm after work, when working adults visit the Community Centre to attend night courses or play sports. Location: Ang Mo Kio Community Centre Date and time when picture (below) was taken: 10th June, 1.34p.m. People who visit are mainly residents, children, teens and retirees a few times a week. During weekends, big families visit.

  8. Location: Ang Mo Kio Community Centre Date and time when picture (right) was taken: 11th June, 9.21a.m. The CC is an open area and is free to use. They can also join workshops like dancing, singing or other performing arts and lessons. It also holds festive events there. This place was renovated before and in place is a community centre with more modern facilities than in the past. Location: Kebun Bahru Bird Singing Corner Date and time when picture (left) was taken: 10th June, 9.45a.m. The Bird Singer Corner@Kebun Bahru is an open grassland with long poles installed at regular intervals of about 1m to hang up bird cages. There is a sheltered area with benches behind the grassland. Retirees usually visit a few times on weekdays to hang up their bird cages to train their birds to sing in preparation for bird-singing competitions held a few times a month.   10. Location: Kebun Bahru Bird Singing Corner Date and time when picture (below) was taken: 11th June, 9.49a.m. Residents also bird-watch, listen to the birds sing and relax at the sheltered area. One of the only two bird singing corners in Singapore, it also attracts occasional tourists. It is about the size of half of a football field (3570 square metres) and most populated during weekdays the retirees who own bird cages and nearby residents to chill and chat. Location: Kebun Bahru Bird Singing Corner Date and time when picture (below) was taken: 17th June, 1.27p.m. Location: Kebun Bahru Bird Singing Corner Date and time when picture (below) was taken: 11th June, 12.32p.m. The other bird singing corner is further away in Yishun and inconvenient for residents living nearby to visit. Another alternative are the nearby coffee shops, minus the scenery and birds' singing. It has never been renovated, and has always been a flatland.

  12. The playground@Bishan Park is located in the Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park. It consists of slides and an open area in a sandpit and is around 520m2. People, especially families with children, visit this place during the weekends or in the evening. One of the two parts of this place is currently under renovation works, as the playground has been worn-down from children's rough play, and some parts are considered dangerous, since it was opened about 2-3 years ago. Families can strengthen their bonds by playing there together and children can make more friends in the playground. The playground at the park is also convenient for people with families as the children can play at the playground while the adults take a stroll or jog around the park.   15. Interview @AMK Kopitiam under Block 232 (Introduction) Good afternoon, we are students from NYGH here to conduct a small interview for our project. We will take about 15 minutes to complete the interview. Our purpose for conducting this interview is to find out how you make use of the space here. • Q : What do you do here? • A : My job is to collect used bowls and utensils to the corner of the hawker centre for the stall owners to take their respective bowls and wash by themselves. My rest day is once every 2 weeks. • Q : How do you separate the bowls? • A : I separate them according to their colours. Each stall’s bowls have different colours. I put them into their assigned buckets. • Q : Is there any specific order in which the tables and stalls are arranged? • A : No. For the tables, it is according to our boss. For the stalls, it is completely random. • Q : Did you make any friends during work? • A : I made a lot of good friends with the stall owners. We become very close over time. • Q : Do you like this job? • A : Yes. It is close to my home, so it’s very convenient. • (Ending) Thank you so much!

  16. Interview @ Kebun Bahru Bird Singing Corner (Introduction) Good afternoon, we are students from NYGH here to conduct a small interview for our project. We will take about 15 minutes to complete the interview. Our purpose for conducting this interview is to find out how you make use of the space here. • Q : What do you do here? • A : I hang up bird cages to prepare for the birds’ singing competition in July. Some cages are owned by me ( each person can own 2-3 birds ) and I wake up at 6am and spend about half of the day here. • Q : What will happen during the competition? • A : The competition is held here, where the bird cages are hung up. Many people will come to participate or just simply look around, including Mr Lee Hsien Loonghimself. There are 4 judges from different countries, like Malaysia, Thailand, etc. Prizes are awarded to the top 10 birds. • Q : Do you train the birds? How? • A : Yes. If they were not trained before the competition, they will be too scared to sing on the actual day. So, we hang up the cages of the birds and they will “self-train”. • Q : Is thereany more bird-singing corners like this in Singapore? • A : There is one in Yishun too, and uncles gather there as well. We bring birds from Yishun to Ang Mo Kio to and fro. • Q : Did you make any friends? • A : Yes, but they are mostly retirees. • Q: Do you enjoy coming here daily? • A : Yes. I enjoy listening to birds for leisure, and it bonds all race and religion together. (Ending) Thank you very much!
