Art For Everyone: What does it discuss? • This chapter is about art and the mission( job, duty) it can perform in the society. • Art can be an important tool in the hands of the artist to express opinions.
Art For Everyone: What does it discuss? • Art can also work in showing the effect of social problems on people.
Art For Everyone: What does it discuss? • The chapter takes the example of the artist Keith Haring who was not only an artist, but also a social activist. He discussed the problems of New York, his city, in his art.
Art For Everyone: What does it discuss? • Haring opened a Pop Shop selling items such as pins, pens and T-shirts which have his art on them. • He wanted everyone to learn about his art and the problems of the society he/she was living in.

Style:The Comma “ , ” • A comma in writing is like a pause inside a sentence when speaking. We use commas inside sentences. Commas separate parts of a sentence into logical elements. Commas have no meaning, but they help us to see the structure and therefore the meaning of the sentence.

Style:The Comma “ , ” • Use a comma after words such as for example, and finally,…. • Use a comma with dates………. • Use a comma between the day and the year following the American style for dates: • ~August 18, 1950. • When writing the day as well as the date also use a comma after the day: • ~We will hold elections for class president on Monday, January 14, 2008.
Exercise 2Read the following two paragraphs. Add six commas to each paragraph. The Haring Family Keith Haring was born in Kutztown Pennsylvania. He lived with his mother his father and his three sisters. His sisters’ names were Kay Karenand Kristen. Keith liked Kay and Karenbut Kristen was probably his favorite. Kristen was the baby in the family. She was 12 years younger than Keith. Keith and Kristen were always good friends.

Add six commas to the following paragraph. Tokyo Pop Shop Haring opened a Pop Shop in Tokyo on January 30, 1988. He wanted the Tokyo Pop Shop to be successful, but it had many problems. People did not buy Haring’s art at the Tokyo Pop Shop because there were cheap copies everywhere. For example, it was easy to buy T-shirts, pins, and posters with “fake” Haring art on them. Finally, the Pop Shop in Tokyo closed in 1989.
