Group of 8 (Go8) The Group of Eight (Go8) is a coalition of leading Australian tertiary institutions, intensive in research and comprehensive in general and professional education. • The University of Adelaide • The Australian National University • The University of Melbourne • Monash University • The University of New South Wales • The University of Queensland • The University of Sydney • The University of Western Australia
Australian Technology Network (ATN) TheAustralian Technology Network (ATN)the five Australian universities with a common focus on the practical application of tertiary studies and research. Their graduate and research outcomes are closely aligned to the needs of industry and wider society. Innovative Research Universities in Australia IRU is a network of seven comprehensive universities conducting research of national and international standing. Entry Requirements – Prerequisites • Entry to some degree courses requires Certain pre-requisites– DO CHECK WITH THE INDIVIDUAL UNIVERSITY. Eg. University of Melbourne – Bachelor of Science (English, Mathematics and one of Bio, Chem or Physics) • Preferred IB subjects & levels or assumed knowledge. While these aren’t always essential, you’ll stand a greater chance of obtaining a place if you can provide evidence of prior learning in these areas. Eg. University of Adelaide – Bachelor of Computer Science (Maths, Physics) • Medicine • ISAT (International Students – No set dates, register between March and January) • UMAT (Domestic Students – Only 1 test date, Eg. 30 July for 2014. Registration closes early June.
Applying as a Domestic Student • Every domestic student must go through the Australian university application system called TAC – Teritary Admissions Centre South Australia & Northern Terrirtory– SATAC Victoria – VTAC New South Wales & Australian Capital Territory – UAC Queensland – QTAC Western Australia – WATAC Tasmania – Direct Application to the university
One online application for each TAC • One online application for each TAC • 8-9 choices across subjects and/or universities • Rank your choices in order Eg. VTAC • Bachelor of Science – Monash • Bachelor of Science – Uni. Of Melbourne • Bachelor of Science – RMIT • Bachelor of Arts – Uni of Melbourne
IB /ID vs ATAR • ATAR = Australian Tertiary Admission Rank - the system used to try to put international examinations on an even weighting. It is based on rank, not performance. Eg. ATAR = 80 (top 20% for the particular year) • The ATAR is what will get you into universities ! • For ID students, please contact the university directly for admission requirements and individual assessment.

Timeline – Domestic Students JULY/AUGUST (post results) • Tertiary Centre Guides are available • Research state, universities and courses to identify prerequisites, assumed knowledge etc • Early closing dates such as Medicine • Prepare for supporting documentation • ATAR vs IB SEPTEMBER • Make application through Tertiary Admissions Centre • Rank order your choices • Decide whether you are applying as HECS (HE • Contribution Scheme) or full fee paying • Apply for accommodation (2 references) • Inform the careers where to send your IB results to
Timeline – Domestic Students OCTOBER • Last chance to make changes to your preferences - additional charges may apply • Submit outstanding documentation JANUARY • Most offers are made late January • Receive one offer ONLY • Decide whether to accept your current offer or wait for second round • Taking a risk ! FEBRUARY • Second round of offers made • Orientation programmes and classes commence by end of February
Applying as an International Student • You do not need to go through the TAC (Tertiary Admissions Centre) • Your IB points will not be converted to ATAR • Before you apply, check the minimum IB requirement
Applying as an International Student Two timings to apply- • Apply directly to each university by late December with your predicted grades to start in August. (Eg. Monash and University of Melbourne). • Have up to 2 or 3 subject choices on one application to each university. • Receive a conditional offer, verify results in July and start in August.
Applying as an International Student • Apply with your final results to start in the following year February. • Apply directly to each university anytime after results, no particular application deadline, but earlier the better • Have up to 2 or 3 subject choices on one application to each university. • Apply for accommodation (2 references) • Generally will receive offers within 3 weeks • Your accommodation will be confirmed after you received an offer.
Tuition fees - Domestic Tuition fees will be charged by subject for most universities and differs according to discipline. Eg. University of Melbourne – 2014
Tuition fees - International Tuition fees are charged for each year you are enrolled. You will pay tuition fees according to your specific subject enrolment in any given semester. Eg. University of Melbourne 2014
Alternative pathway to university study (1) Technical & Further Education (TAFE) – Australian Government funded vocational and technical training. TAFE institutes provide direct pathways to university study. They are widely recognised for their role in preparing people for work by providing training, skills and knowledge that lead to employment.
Alternative pathway to university study (2) Foundation courses prepare students for university Entry. Most Australian universities offer foundation courses.
Alternative pathway to university study (2) You can choose your preferred stream (Eg. Commerce, Sciences etc) Guaranteed place in the relevant bachelor degree at the university if you fulfill their requirement.
