  2. Key Skills The Smith family is trying to decide between installing a cable TV or purchasing a VCR and renting tapes. Cable TV: one-time installation charge of $45, and $34 per month charge VCR: one-time VCR purchase of $185, and rent 8 tapes per month @ $2.50 per tape, for $20 per month

  3. c =34m + 45 c = 20m + 185 Solve by graphing. 400 (10, 385) Cost 200 At 10 months, both plan will cost $385; prior to 10 months cable is cheaper (red line), after 10 months, cable is more expensive. 5 10 15 months

  10. The Carolina Wren Bird Club held its annual photography contest among its members. Contestants receive 4 points for photos of songbirds and 20 points for photos of birds of prey. Last years winner had a total of 200 points from 38 photos. How many photos of each type of bird did the winner photograph. songbird points + birds of prey points = 200 points 4x + 20y = 200 # of 4-point photos + # of 20-point photos = 38 photos x + y = 38
