The female lays her eggs on or near the plants they eat. The Appalachian Eyed Brown lives in marshy grasslands in Sedge plants which they eat. They do not drink nectar! Stage One - Eggs
Stage Two - Caterpillar • The Appalachian Eyed Brown lives from June to October each year. • The caterpillars eat at night and hide near the roots of the plants during the day. • Caterpillars born late in the season can hibernate over winter.
Stage Three - Chrysalis • The Appalachian Eyed Brown caterpillar encloses itself into a cocoon, or chrysalis.
After eight to ten days in its chrysalis, the adult butterfly emerges! The Appalachian Eyed Brown can be identified by its light brown color and the row of eye shaped spots on its wings. Stage Four - Butterfly
