ACTIVITY 2.7: UNPACKING THE LEARNING OUTCOMES AND ASSESSMENT STANDARDS • ACTIVITY OUTCOMES • Demonstrate an understanding of the LOs and ASs • Apply the ASs in developing activities • Link the ASs with relevant content • Identify progression via the ASs through the grades • Identify the “new” content • Develop a professional development programme
THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LEARNING OUTCOMES AND ASSESSMENT STANDARDS • Learning Outcomes • LOs explain what learners have to be able to demonstrate at the end of the band • Four Learning Outcomes per subject • Learning Outcome and Assessment Standards are integrated - don`t isolate them • Number of ASs per LO differs from 4 to 9
ASSESSMENT STANDARDS • Assessment Standards provide level of complexity per grade • Assessment Standards provide minimum standards to be achieved per grade • Assessment Standards determine the learning/ teaching and assessment strategies • Most of the ASs in the Agri-Sciences include the content /context (LO 2-4)
Instructions • Study the Learning Outcome and Assessment Standards allocated to your group • Study the National Curriculum Statement, LPG and use key words to explain the following on the newsprint/flipchart provided: • What the learners have to demonstrate, • The scope and depth of the content/context, • Ideas for an activity or activities to address the LO and Assessment Standards (not a 1:1 ratio), • How progression throughout the grades is prescribed, • Identify the new content, • Complete worksheet 2.4.2 to develop a professional developmental programme for yourself • Select a member of the group to provide feedback
Allocation of Time • Unpacking of LO and ASs = 30 min. • (Manage this activity - e.g. work in pairs) • Preparing Transparencies = 15 min. • Feedback per group = 15 min. per group • (12 groups x 15 min = 180 min) • Wrap-up = 10 min per subject = 30
Example • KEY WORDS FOR LO 1: Investigate and analyse • Scientific method, and looking for patterns, changes • differences and similarities • KEY WORDS FOR AS 1: Planning • Formulate a question • State all variables • Select variable to be tested • Apparatus • Content/Context • Types of soils
Example (Cont.) • LIST NEW CONTENT/SKILLS • Scientific method • Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS) • PROGRESSION THROUGH GRADES: • Key words for as 1: Planning • Grade 12 testing a hypothesis • Grade 10: any aspect • Grade 11: production • Grade 12: processing & marketing
