  2. Definition: Parliament • highest legislative body in a country • have many responsibilities for its country • create laws that apply to all

  3. History • England was run by King Henry III • King made ALL the laws for the country • Nobles weren't liking the was he was governing England

  4. (con’d) • In 1258 an event trigged nobles to take action • Nobles forced the King to swear on oath • Monarchy's power was limited • Given to a council of 15 barons

  5. Features • Laws apply to all, not just the King • Reduced the power of the monarchy • More than one person is running the country

  6. Examples Parliament isn’t a code of laws, it’s a way of running a country and creating new laws • Laws passed by Parliament are called STATUTE LAWS • Statute law is a written law • They deal with specific situations
