  2. The Beginning • Born on March 24, 1976 in New Orleans, Louisiana. • After graduating from Isidore Newman High School, Manning came to play for the Tennessee Volunteers. • Manning quotes, “I want a challenge. At Ole Miss, I was already a celebrity. At the University of Tennessee, I would have to prove myself.” • And that is just what he did.

Years as a Vol • During his freshman year as a Volunteer, he shared the starting quarterback position with freshman Brandon Stewart. • With the loss of Brandon Stewart, Manning became the only starting quarterback for Tennessee. • After becoming the only starter for the Vols, Manning led the team to victory in six out of seven games. • Thank to those six wins, Tennessee went to the Gator Bowl that year.

Years as a Vol • After their win against Virginia Tech (45-23), Manning was cemented as a “core player.” • During his years at UT, the Vols went to the Citrus Bowl in 1995 and 1996 with wins from both, but with a loss in 1997 at the Orange Bowl. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FWWZH9m3gTs&feature=related • After three years at the University of Tennessee, Peyton met all his requirements for his Bachelor’s degree with a 3.6 GPA and was qualified to graduate the end of his junior year.

Years as a Vol • Even though he was able to graduate early, he stayed behind to continue through his senior year to finish playing as a Volunteer. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dUY2pUKkZXo&feature=related • During his final year at UT, Manning took the Volunteers to the Eastern Division Southeastern Conference (SEC) Championship in 1997. • His years at UT resulted in a thirty-three passing record, the all-time leading passer with 11,201 yards, 863 completions, and 89 touchdowns.

Years as a Vol • He also set the SEC records that included passing yards, pass completions, and completion percentage. • He took home both the Davey O’Brien and Johnny Unitas awards, which are awarded to the best college quarterbacks in the nation. • In the year of 1998, the Sullivan Award (an award for the best amateur athlete in the United States) was given to Peyton Manning.

Community Service • Along with his academic achievements, Peyton donated a great sum of money to various Knoxville organizations. • He pledged exactly $1 million to UT’s athletics department. • In 1999, he formed a foundation called PeyBack. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nUtkbGBwO9k • Peyton states that PeyBack “ promotes the future success of disadvantaged youth by assisting programs that provide leadership and growth opportunities for children at risk.”

Community Service • PeyBack supports an organization called CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) that helps abused and neglected children. • PeyBack donated $2500 to CASA. • PeyBack has donated gloves, scarves, t-shirts, and books to Beaumont Elementary School; $5000 to Boys & Girls Clubs of the Tennessee Valley; $5000 to both the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Tennessee and the Lakeshore United Methodist Assembly Camp &Retreat.

  12. Community Service • He helped the Red Cross Associate during Hurricane Katrina. • He was awarded the Waltor Payton Man of the Year Award in February of 2006 for his community services across the country.
