  2. True or False The “underground railroad” was a train that carried runaway slaves?

  3. False This was the name given to a network of individual families and people who would provide safe lodging for a slave as they made their way north to freedom. These families and individuals had to be careful, because it was illegal to hide or help a slave run away. They were said to “work underground”. Slaves knew which houses were ‘safe’ houses because the owners would light a lantern and put it on their fence post or in a window.

  5. False Although the northern states did not support slavery, slaves were not safe there. Slaves were still owned by their masters and could get in trouble for running away if they were caught. Slaves had to travel, by foot, all the way to Canada in order to be truly free.
