False This was the name given to a network of individual families and people who would provide safe lodging for a slave as they made their way north to freedom. These families and individuals had to be careful, because it was illegal to hide or help a slave run away. They were said to “work underground”. Slaves knew which houses were ‘safe’ houses because the owners would light a lantern and put it on their fence post or in a window.
