OBJECTIVES • 1. Identify strategies that will minimize reading overload • 2. Identify a technique that will help to learn and study more effectively as you read your nursing and science textbooks. (SQ3R technique) • 3. State the relationship between the material, the reading purpose and strategy, and the pace of reading. • 4. Discuss strategies that will enable the student to achieve a greater depth of understanding of material.
READING • First set the stage • Setting • Time • Place • Set goal
Define purpose The purpose drives how much time and effort reading requires. • Read for understanding • Read to evaluate analytically • Read for practical application • Read for pleasure • Determine the pace The type of material determines the purpose and pace.
How are nursing and science texts different • Increased new vocabulary and abbreviations. • Content is not narrative so the flow of the text is more challenging. • Content is concentrated and text is full of information, diagrams, and formulas.
SQ3R • Survey • Question • 3R • Read • Recite • Review
Critical Reading • Seek understanding of what you read • Evaluate the issue to determine accuracy and logical flow • Evaluate the quality of the evidence • Evaluate whether the support fits the concept • Evaluate the logical connections • Be media literate – what are trustworthy sources
Study Groups • Identify the ‘Pros and Cons’ • Effective strategies for a successful study group (pg 198)
