Why Take EXPLORE? • EXPLORE shows students their academic strengths and weaknesses in English, math, reading, and science • EXPLORE helps students search for careers and learn which ones might be right for them • EXPLORE helps students choose high school courses that will prepare you for college and work

Earning Credit Before High School • Students may attempt to earn high school credit before entering high school • See page 10in the Course Selection Guide • Testing out requests are due to the Mill Creek Middle School guidance office by May 15th • We may offer the option of a credit acceleration opportunity through E - Summer School • The G.P.A. begins when the student begins high school

Next Steps… • Review the Course Selection Guide • Complete the 4-Year planning sheet and course selection sheet • Your student will meet with HS counselors on Mon., March 19th – Discuss choices at home • Return signed course selection sheets to Mill Creek office by 3/26. • Do your very best for the remainder of the 8th grade year • Plan to attend the freshmen student and parent orientation in August.

  12. In Summary… • 8th grade students will update their Educational Development Plans and choose High School classes in February • 8th grade students at Mill Creek will take the EXPLORE in March

Avoiding Pitfalls • Failing 1.5 credits (3 semester classes), failing any English class or failing any math class in high school puts a student behind in being able to graduate with their class • Not doing homework and not taking advantage of retesting opportunities are the biggest reasons students fail courses • Algebra I is the course most often failed at CPHS • Remediation and support is readily available – STUDENTS AND PARENTS MUST ACCESS THIS INTERVENTION EARLY!!!
