Introducing the ACT Climate Change Council Professor Barbara Norman Chair- ACT Climate Change Council
The Council The ACT Climate Change Council was established under the Climate Change and Greenhouse Gas Reduction Act 2010. The main function of the Council is to advise the Minister for the Environment and Sustainable Development on matters relating to: reducing greenhouse gas emissions; and addressing, and adapting to, climate change. In exercising its functions, the Council seeks to: consult representatives from business and the community, including environmental and conservation entities, on matters relating to climate change; and provide information to encourage action to address, or adapt to, climate change.

Council Members The Council represents a range of sectors within the Canberra community. Recent Expression of Interest for new members with expertise in energy and transport issues specific to the ACT.
ACT Government GHG reduction targets The Climate Change and Greenhouse Gas Reduction Act 2010 sets out voluntary greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets: - per person emissions peak by 2013 - 40% below 1990 level by 2020 - 80% below 1990 level by 2050 - zero net emissions by 2060
AP2- A new climate change strategy andaction plan for the Australian Capital Territory Released in September 2012 Primary focus is to set the Territory on the path to meet the 2020 greenhouse gas reduction target Achieving this target will establish a strong foundation for the achievement of the Territory’s vision for 2060 Access AP2 at www.environment.act.gov.au/climate_change/ap2
AP2 underlying vision The vision By 2060, the ACT is a sustainable and carbon neutral city that adapts to a changing climate. Measured by minimising the ACT’s impact on global climate change by achieving the ACT’s legislated GHG reduction targets ensuring a fair society in a low-carbon economy strengthening the ACT’s capacity to respond to a changing climate, and creating a more sustainable future.
AP2 Actions Reducing residential sector emissions 6 actions Reducing non-residential sector emissions 3 actions Reducing transport sector emissions 1 action Reducing waste sector emissions 1 action
AP2 Actions (cont.) Transitioning to large-scale renewable energy 3 actions Adapting to a changing climate 3 actions Monitoring, reporting and future decision making 1 action
Adapting to a changing climate While reducing our carbon footprint is the primary focus of AP2, the ACT also needs to prepare for some unavoidable changes in the climate. Adaptation responses will be required even after carbon dioxide concentrations have stabilised because long lags in the climate system will result in continuing change. The value of taking action to adapt will increase with the degree of climate change.
