  3. Anatomical Directions • It is convention to use standard terms to help describe movement in relation to anatomy These can be divided into: • Planes • Directions

  4. There are Three planes of movement: Sagittal Coronal (or frontal) Transverse

  5. Top? • GeneralDirections in the anatomical position • Anterior/posterior • Superior/inferior • Proximal/distal • Medial/lateral • Special Directions • Palmer/Dorsal (hand) • Plantar/dorsal (foot) Top? Top? Why bother? To avoid ambiguities such as might occur if a word such as "top” were used

  6. Anatomical Movements • Adjusting angle between two parts • Flexion • Extension • Adjusting relation to mid-line of body • Abduction • Adduction • Rotating body parts • Rotation • Circumduction • Adjusting elevation • Elevation • Depression

  7. Examples • Can you think of an example of movements where you would use? • Elbow flexion • Hip flexion • Shoulder flexion • Knee Extension • Spine extension • Abduction of the arm • Adduction of the arm • Rotation of the neck • Circumduction of the wrist • Elevation of the shoulder • Depression of the jaw
