Stuck in the Middle : Digital Rights Expression from the Vendor Point of View NISO Pre-Standards Workshop on Digital Rights Expression May 18, 2005 Gillian Harrison, MLIS Sr. Manager Library and Product Research NetLibrary, a division of OCLC Online Computer Library Center
Ability to search full text across large numbers of content units Ability to access content 24/7 Ability to “surface” content in multiple discovery channels Ability to locate and access discrete sections or pieces of information within a work Where I want it… When I want it… How I want it… P Print Book “p” to “e” – what is the added value
Players and Paths Creator Publisher Vendor Library User
Creators and Publishers ask Vendors for… • Metadata • Standards, branding • Security • Authentication, authorization • Access limitations • Timeframe, print, copy/paste, online/offline, transfer, save, burn, archive • Usage tracking • Economic model
Libraries and Usersask Vendors for… • Aggregation and Disaggregation • Entire works, chapters, sections, pages, entries • Accessibility • Authoritative • Easy access • Economic Model
Where does that leave the Vendor? • Metadata • Security • Access limitations • Usage tracking • Economic model • Aggregation and Disaggregation • Accessibility • Authoritative • Easy access • Economic Model
Stuck in the middle… • Asking for thought processes and information that are vaguely or not even yet to be defined • Asking for standard or consistent information to make process of working with multiple parties easy and economically feasible • As technologists, being asked to lead and set the standards in defining and implementing (either explicitly or implicitly) Vendor • Asking for mental leap from “p” to “e” (recognizing and realizing the added value while respecting the existing value) • Being asked for digital content with consistent and easy access methods and models • As technologists, being perceived as the definer (not just the implementer)
What might aVendor ask for? • Consistency • Clarity of role • Rigidity and flexibility • Common vocabulary • ???
