RFP Process • One vendor said an RFP feels like a personality profile test • Very repetitive - a lot of questions asked 2 or 3 times • Be specific in questions • Define existing systems • Authentication methods • Z39.50 • Reference databases • Extended functionality goals • Try to define project goals • Will implementation be in phases or ?

  3. Authentication • Local ILS • SIP2 • NCIP • Other? • State or consortium options • Local database • A little of everything

Library Catalogs • Local Catalogs (ILS) • Z39.50 • Define functionality • Training local libraries • Define extended functions of the the local system to be integrated • Union Database • Smaller or older systems • Transitional members • Addresses the needs of the libraries without technology or ILS

  5. Adding Reference Databases • Define your resources • Be aware of licensing issues • Is access limited to within the library? • Do you pay for a resource on a per search basis? • Consider how you wish to access the resources • HTTP – Native Interface • Z39.50 • XML, API, Other

  6. Customization • Consider if staff needs will be different from patrons • Personalization • What other services will you be providing? • Patron accounting • Place holds • ILL • e-Commerce

  7. Maintenance • Allow for HTTP changes with resources • Consider your ongoing FTEs to manage the system, updates and enhancements
