  2. The Flag of Yemen • The red stripe represents the blood shed during the country's struggle for independence. • The white symbolizes hope for the future, and the black stripe represents an end to the country's dark past.

  3. Yemen’s Religions & Racial Breakdown • Religions in Yemen consist of 53% Sunni Muslims and the Shiite Muslims are at around 47%. • The country also contain dwindling numbers of Jews. • The races consist of Arabic which is 97.5%, African which is 1.2%, and the rest of the population is about 1.3%

Yemen’s Economy • The country of Yemen has roughly 23 million citizens. • Yemen’s reported average annual growth was in the range of 3-4% from 200 to 2007. • In 2008, the growth rate plummeted below 3% because the price of oil decreased dramatically. • The GDP of Yemen is estimated to be about $60.48 billion.

  5. Education and Family Life • The literacy rate for men is about 70%. • The literacy rate for women is about 30%. • Most of the Yemeni live in major cities. • Others live in small mountain villages. • The Yemeni house’s are arranged in certain ordered by the level of the floor.

  6. Entertainment and Literature • The major forms of entertainment are music, poetry, and dance. • Yemen produced some of the finest poets and musicians throughout the world. • The Yemeni read the Koran which is the religious book in which the citizens of the country follow their beliefs.

  7. Foreign Relations • Yemen has a slight dispute with its neighboring country Saudi Arabia. • Saudi Arabia reinforced a concrete-filled security barrier on the border between the two. • Saudi Arabia has a problem with illegal immigrants from Yemen.

  8. Relationship with U.S. • Yemen is on the U.S.’s major focuses on terrorism. • The Yemeni government has begun searching for suspected Al-Qaida members and supporters. • Former president George W. Bush promised additional security in that effort.

  9. Status of Women • There are a few women groups who fight for women rights. • For example, Ittihad Niso Al-Yemen. • Two more groups are the YWA and the General Union of Yemeni.

  10. Overview • At the beginning of this assignment, I knew very little about the country of Yemen. As I continued with this assignment, I struggled to find the information to complete this essay. After I searched and found what I needed I found many negative views on this country. For example the economy is terrible, and the education is not at the best it could be neither. So from the information that I have found, it seems to me that the country has a lot of work cut out for the citizens if they would like to be a elite country in this world.
