Sprite Ripping Tutorial Instructions Written By: Joe Palmer
Introduction • This tutorial is to briefly show how to ‘rip’ a sprite/image from a different image and make it a transparent .PNG Image File for use with BYOB. • As a secondary note, you can also use this same method to make a transparent .GIF file. The settings would be the same, but instead of selecting PNG24, select. GIF and enable Transparency.
The Subject: • This is a complete Sprite Ripped image from Galaga, opened in photoshop. Notice that it contains the image for each animation used in the game.
Step one Magic Wand Tool Magic Wand Tool, • Open up the Picture you want to rip from in Photoshop. Use the Magic Wand Tool to Crop the desired object then Press Ctrl + C to Copy it to your clipboard. After which, open up a separate, new document. (File -> New)
Creating a New Document with Transparency Enabled After copying your Selection, Create a New Document (File -> New) and the new File Dialog will have the same image settings as the Selection that you copied to your clipboard. Change the ‘Background Contents’ drop down menu to Transparent. After Creating the new document, press Ctrl + V on your Keyboard to Paste your Selection into the New Document.
Step 4 – Saving the Image • Saving the image has to be done a certain way. In file, instead of selecting ‘Save’ or ‘Save As’ you need to select ‘Save for Web…’
Make sure to Save it as PNG – 24 and have the Checkbox ‘Transparency’ have a Checkmark in it. Once your done, Click ‘Save…” and a Dialog will appear asking you where you want to save it.
After you import, you will need to zoom in on your new piece of art enable to see it properly, depending on how small your actual image was/is.
To Get Sprite Animations to Work… You will have to repeat this process for each costume. Importing a costume is as easy as Importing a New Sprite. Simple Go to the Costume Tab and Select the Import button Give it a Try!
