Reading Programs • For Lancaster Elementary School
A great tool for teachers and parents to check comprehension skills of students. Are they really reading and understanding or just turning the pages? • Can be a great motivator for some students. Some of them will love to earn a ribbon, work toward a personal goal, help the class achieve a class AR goal, etc. • Motivates students to read
Diminishes the joy of reading: students begin to read for points or prizes, hence it becomes valuable for earning prizes but not for the joy of reading. Awarding prizes for reading is not teaching a love of reading. • Can become a dreaded “chore”: when students "have" to read (or score a certain number of points) for a grade. The pressure aspiring readers could lose interest.
Undo pressure is placed on those students compelled to fill a quota as determined by the teacher. • STAR test and ZPD ranges place labels and restrictions on students' reading. We should be helping students to find appropriate books, using favorite author, genre, series, etc. as methods for choosing books. • AR also isn't really a comprehension test, but a detail quiz. The tests do not determine true comprehension. The best way to monitor comprehension is to ASK questions: Why, What Happened, What do you think?
Limiting reading to just AR books is tantamount to censorship and reading discrimination. • Students leave a lot of great literature on the shelf. Reduces reading choices. • Privacy issues occur when we level the books. No other person needs to know what a student is reading (and on what level he/she is reading) except that student's parents.
TUMBLEBOOKS • TumbleBook Library is an online collection of TumbleBooks – animated, talking picture books which teach kids the joy of reading in a format they'll love. TumbleBooks are created by adding animation, sound, music and narration to existing picture books in order to produce an electronic picture book which you can read, or have read to you.
COST FACTOR: • The Bottom Line: • AR tests cost: $3.00 each • (we currently have only 277 tests- not enough to cover ALL grade levels) To cover broad range of reading levels, we need to purchase at least 500 additional tests=$1,500 • Tumblebooks (12 month)subscription cost: $399.00 • (If we purchase with another school i.e. RH E, 10% discount: $359.10)
