BODY LANGUAGE • Our own behavior can affect those around us. • We try to draw impressions of people, and they of us, by observing both their verbal and non-verbal behavior. • We communicate a lot without saying a word. • It is estimated that over 75 percent of the messages we deliver are communicated non-verbally. • We express ourselves using what is known as body language. • Body language can be as simple as a frown on your face, a smile, crossing your arms, or tapping your pen on a desk. Some convey hostility, others show open friendliness.
Body language includes our gestures, facial expressions, dress, and grooming style. Researchers have documented some non-verbal expressions common to all cultures . • However , cultures show these common expressions indifferent ways. • These common expressions are: • • Joy • • Sorrow • • Fear • • Anger • • Surprise • • Disgust
Meaning : • Body language is a form of non-verbal communication , which consists of body posture , gestures , facial expressions , and eye movements . • Humans send and interpret such signals almost entirely subconsciously . • Body language is a powerful concept which successful people tend to understand well. • Understanding body language: • The technique of “reading” people is used frequently. For example, the idea of Mirroring body language to put people at ease is commonly used in interviews. • Mirroring the body language of someone else indicates that they are understood.
Contents of body language: • Physical expression • Kinesics • Mirroring • Physical Expression : • Physical Expression like waving, pointing, touching and slouching are all forms of nonverbal communication . The study of body movement and expression is known as kinesics . Humans move their bodies when communicating because, as research has shown it helps "ease the mental effort when communication is difficult." Physical expressions reveal many things about the person using them.
Kinesics: • Kinesics is the interpretation of body language such as facial expressions and gestures — or, more formally, non-verbal behavior related to movement, either of any part of the body or the body as a whole. • Mirroring : • Mirroring is the behavior in which one person copies another person usually while in social interaction with them. It may include miming gestures , movements, body language , muscle tensions, expressions, tones, eye movements , breathing, tempo, accent , attitude , choice of words/ metaphors and other aspects of communication . It is often observed among couples or close friends .
PHYSICAL APPEARANCE • Realize the importance of physical appearance—your customers and prospects do! • Your appearance and the materials you have with you are both sales tools. • Slumping in a chair or having a spot on your jacket can take the person’s attention away from what you are saying. • So can playing with a pen or fixing your hair, Look successful and relax.
FACIAL EXPRESSIONS • The face is said to be capable of over 250,000 different expressions! People are more aware of these silent messages than you realize. • You might say “I’m glad you brought that up,” as a means of exploring an objection further. But if you say it with your jaw set and your mouth nothing but a thin line, you are obviously annoyed and the prospect may go on the defensive.
TONE OF VOICE • Your tone of voice has a greater range than you might think. It can go from warm to cold in a matter of seconds. • You don’t have to speak with a “smile” all the time, but you can indicate interest and enthusiasm with the right inflections and create a positive climate throughout the meeting.
PRACTICE YOUR HANDSHAKE • A firm handshake is said to make a positive impression. However, “firm” to some people seems to include bone-crushing, pumping tactics or not letting go.
BE VOICE CONSCIOUS • Everyone has speech habits that hinder effective communication. For instance, some people will say “I see” whenever the prospect has finished speaking. And then there are the “ah-h-h” and “well’s” that pop up from time to time. • Many people just aren’t aware they say these things. If you’re not certain of your own voice behavior, practice with a tape recorder. • Speak at a speed that will enable people to hear every word. • Choose your words so you don’t become known for speaking a lot but saying a little. • Try to be conversational in your presentation.
