    2. Background East Kent Hospitals NHS Trust covers 800 square miles. 11 community based midwifery teams. 101 GP Surgeries (409 GP’s). 24/7 Community Based Service. Births 2006-2007 6,956 Two Stand Alone Birthing Centres Two Acute sites Caseload in Thanet 1400

    5. The Project 9 months from conception to birth Opened in March 2006 1st ANC in a supermarket in UK! RCM Innovation in Midwifery Practice Award 2006

    6. Who Did It Involve? - Women - Midwives - Commissioner of PCT - Health & Safety Department - Clinical Risk Team - Legal Team - Head of Midwifery - Supervisor of Midwives - Sainsbury’s staff - local & head office - Communications Department - GP’s - Communication with other supermarkets

    10. What Does it Offer Midwives? Relaxed working environment Time for Information Sharing Friendly Staff Ownership of an innovative project Easy, free parking Plenty of cakes and coffee!!

    11. One Year On 72 women used the service in the first year 192 expected 2006-2007 on recent bookings DNA’s – NIL All would use this service again 25 out 28 Sainsbury staff support project Diabetic Team starting workshop Jan’08 in Sainsbury’s

    12. Why did women choose Sainsbury’s? Easy parking Flexible appointment times Friendly staff Shopping opportunity Extended appointment Free Hopper Bus, comfortable waiting area, opportunity to purchase drinks.

    13. How could it be improved? Larger room Examination Couch Better access

    14. The Future Build on projects success Prefab building in Sainsbury’s Car Park Link in with the Children Centres Provide outreach services Link with other agencies, sexual health, teenage pregnancy Replicate service in other areas if appropriate
