Who we are • The IET (formerly The IEE) is a UK body • IEE founded in 1871 • Largest professional engineering society in Europe • Worldwide membership of 150,000 • advancement of electrical, electronic, computing and manufacturing science and engineering • role has broadened to become increasingly inclusive, global and multi-disciplinary • range from students to the most distinguished and highly qualified members of the profession.

  3. The IET • The Institution of Engineering and Technology came into being on 31 March 2006 • Merger of the Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE) with the Institution of Incorporated Engineers (IIE) • Run by the Board of Trustees

Why the Institution of Engineering andTechnology? • To accurately represent the interests of all its members and reflects its vision for the future. • The IEE and IIE cover electrical, electronics, communications, manufacturing, computing, software, IT, robotics, nanotechnology, mechanical and structural a wide range of disciplines • Our members classify themselves as working in ICT – 22%, electronics – 22%, power/energy – 18% and mechanical/manufacturing and production – 14%. • The IEE brand will be retained and used where it best serves our interests. • IEE Wiring Regulations • IEE Proceedings, IEE Electronics Letters, IEE Inspec. etc

What We Do • Represent the profession - Engineering • Ensure high standards of professional competence– academic, training • Award scholarships, grants and prizes • Issue regulations • Arrange lectures, meetings, conferences, seminars,publications • Set standards for the professional conduct • Maintain a web based data base http:\\www.theiet.org

Membership Categories • Fellow (FIET) • most senior category of membership • open to members who have demonstrated significant individual responsibility, sustained achievement and exceptional professionalism. • Member (MIET) • main category of membership • open to all who can demonstrate, by their education and their experience, that they are professionally engaged in one of the many fields within the scope of the IET. • Affiliates • open to all, and particularly technicians in all sectors, who would value and benefit from membership of the IET. • Student Members
