  5. Two Separate Systems Stormwater is NOT treated! Everything that flows into the stormwater system goes into your local water bodies! Only 38% of people in NC know that!

  18. Why should I care?

  19. Fishing and Shellfish Fish and shellfish can accumulate dangerous toxins from the water they filter.

  20. Swimming Runoff likely contaminated by pathogens. They can be bacteria, protozoa, or viruses. Pathogens can enter a human body through consumption of contaminated shellfish, ingestion during water-related recreational activities, and even through skin contact with contaminated waters.

Simple things you can do Vehicle and Garage • Store hazardous materials properly in the original labeled container. • Dispose of unwanted chemicals at the local hazardous household waste collection site. NEVER pour chemicals down the storm drain! • Check your car for leaks and have your car repaired when you find them. Keep your car tuned up. Lawn and Garden • Keep your gutters swept and clear of leaves and debris. • Use pesticides and fertilizers sparingly. Never apply when the weather forecast is calling for rain. • Pick up trash and litter around your yard.

  24. More things you can do! Sidewalk and Driveway • Sweep litter and debris from the sidewalk and driveway. Hosing these areas down washes debris and litter into the stormdrain. • If you wash your own car, pull your car up onto the grass to avoid washing runoff into the storm drains. Get involved! • Adopt-A-Drain • Install a rain garden or a rain barrel • Educate others about the dangers of stormwater pollution
