Watergate Scandal • Nixon tries to deny his involvement • Cover up= says it was the Democratic that broke in • Later gets caught…resigns before he is “fired” • No one is above the law
Energy and Oil Crisis • 1970s saw a gas crisis • OPEC (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries ) • Made of up mostly Arab countries • put embargos (or restrictions) to selling oil to any Israel allies, which meant the United States.
Iran Revolution • In 1959, American CIA helped to overthrow the Democratic leader and replace him with a monarchy. • 1979 • People of Iran wanted to end reign of the monarchy that was in place: “Shah” • “Death to Shah” “Death to America”
Iran Revolution • Riots broke out amongst citizens and Shah left. • Riots eventually shut city down • Elections were held and people voted in their new leader, Ayatollah as supreme leader of Iran • He did away with all political parties and any contact with America.
Iran-Contra Scandal • Occurred under the Ronald Regan Administration in • America had hostages in Lebanon. • In hopes of getting them back, Regan sold weapons to our sworn enemy, Iran. • With the money we made, we gave guns and $$$ to extremist Nicaragua group, the Contra. • THIS WAS ILLEGAL TRADING!
End of the Cold War • Began when people of Poland demanded a noncommunist government and got it. • Soviet leader did NOT react. (took office in ‘85) • One by one, other communist countries fell, ending with Germany and the tearing down of Berlin Wall
Population Growth • Developing countries: dramatic growth • Better technology • Medical advancements • More food • This all means higher rates of fertility, longer lives and more babies!
