Public Health Need • Up to 70% of primary care appointments are linked to psychosocial issues • Chronic conditions are the fastest growing part of primary care with about 60% of these patients adhering poorly to treatment • About 28% of Americans experience a diagnosable psychiatric disorder annually • ¾ of this group are not treated in specialty mental health care

  3. Mental Health vs. Behavioral Health • Implied division between mind and body • Behavioral health includes all issues impacted by behavior

  4. Behavioral Health Consultation • Behavioral health consultant (BHC) is a member of the primary care team • The BHC helps the primary care provider manage the psychosocial needs of patients • The BHC makes recommendations to the PCP and patient to improve overall patient functioning

  5. Why & How it works… • Unhealthy lifestyles are responsible for most of the top 10 causes of mortality and morbidity in the U.S. • BHCs have advanced training in helping people achieve behavioral change • Goals: avoid stigmatization; maximize function
