  2. Purpose • Describe the Maine Partners in Nursing – Innovative Ideas Grant:  “Home Healthcare Curricular Integration Initiative” • Grant goals • Implementation • Progress to date

  3. Maine Partners in Nursing Education and Practice Five priorities for Maine include: • Develop and implement nursing core competencies for the Nurse of the Future • Create paths for innovation in nursing education • Re-imagine nursing education and practice as we reflect on future patient needs • Involve a broad coalition of stakeholders • Build bridges and partnerships between education and practice to develop models for entering and re-entering nursing practice.

  4. Background • Opportunity identified • Professional Advisory Committee • Collaboration on proposal for Innovative Ideas proposal: • Development and Marketing • Clinical Education Coordinator • HHVN awarded $1,000 grant

  5. Grant Value • Increasing population of elder residents in Maine • Patients want to remain in their own homes • Movement toward more cost-efficient healthcare • Identified need for home health education in nursing curriculum

  6. Grant Goals • Introduce home health care into the nursing student curriculum • Collaboration with Maine nursing school faculty • Innovative process : on-line education • Companion learning to clinical placements • Home health education to promote home healthcare as a viable future professional choice

  7. Collaboration • HomeHealth Visiting Nurses nursing education program partnerships: • Southern Maine Community College • St. Joseph’s College • University of New England • University of Maine • University of Southern Maine

  8. On-Line Modules • Home Care Institute maintains a Core Library of computer-based training home health modules • Approved for nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center • Three modules for the grant: • Home Care: Beyond the Basics • OASIS-C Basics • Home Health Covered Services

  9. Pilot Spring Semester 2012 • University of Southern Maine students • Nursing Care of the Older Adult in the Community • Instructor – Linda Samia • HHVN clinical educator guest lecturer (3/22/12) • Nursing Summit (3/21/12)

  10. Next Steps • Communicate module availability at other partner institutions for fall semester 2012 • Explore sustainability
