High-School Students Internship Programme ReuniónPrograma CERN HSSIP Subdirección General de Internacionalización de la Ciencia y la Innovación Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades M.Capeans (CERN) Madrid, 10/10/18
High-School Students Internship Programme - Objective https://hssip.web.cern.ch • In a close collaboration with its member states, CERN invites high-school students (aged 16-19) to come to CERN for two weeks, to gain practical experience in science, technology, and innovation. It focuses on giving students the chance to discover STEM in the CERN context and environment, strengthening their understanding of science, and developing their skills in a high-tech environment. • This programme is a unique opportunity for high-school students to be introduced to CERN, its technologies and physics, as well as to learn through workshops and by shadowing, observing, and working with a member of personnel. • hands-on opportunity in an international research laboratory • instilling scientific curiosity • motivating high-school students to take on a career in science, engineering, or another subject related to fundamental research
HSSIP at a Glance • Five/six countries per year • Up to 24 high-school students (16 years+) • Two accompanying teachers • One national coordinator in the country and one at CERN • 12 supervisors • Two weeks internship at CERN • The students have the chance to gain practical experience in science, technology, and innovation.

Feedback from participants • Changed my view of “what scientists do” • Impressed by the international, collaborative work • Relation between science / particle physics and other disciplines more clear now • Importance of computing knowledge ➔ new high-school student ambassadors for CERN!
Spain programme – Additional information to help defining the scope of work ahead • Cost for Spain = 0 • Selection and trip organization done by Spain • Cost of trips will be fully reimbursed by CERN (note on insurance costs) • When again? • First round of the HSSIP programme running for all member states • If second round done (not confirmed), the programme would come back to each country after 4-5 years • The total size of the group is 26 people, nominally 24 students+2 teachers. • In some countries, 1 teacher is needed per 10 students. This means the programme runs with 23 students + 3 teachers
Spain programme – TO DO LIST • Define Students Selection process in Spain • The process shall be fair and free (e.g. the pool of candidates have not been selected out of a program where they had to pay to get in) • HSSIP team likes competitions to select the best, complemented with spontaneous applications (2-5) to attract ‘less obvious’ candidates (not a rule, but a plus) • Candidates representing geographical and gender diversity (not a rule, but a plus) • Students (>16y) have to be enrolled in the school when they participate in HSSIP 2019. This means that 18/19 cannot be their final school year • CERN needs to be informed of the selection process chosen asap • Admin timeline, CERN needs: • 1 month before school the names of students and 2 teachers • 2 weeks before school the registration documents received at CERN
Spain programme Looking forward to work with all of you! Mar Capeans mar.capeans@cern.ch + 41 75 411 4590
