  2. Online survey: HEIs • Explored: • Benefits and drawbacks of staff placements (for HEI and for participant) • Placement length/ format • Process for identifying staff member/ company • Interest in a grant programme • Alternative approaches

  3. Who completed the survey? • 35 respondents from 17+ HEIs • Wide range of roles represented, each with an interest in employability: “Supervision of students. Member of senate. Employability is everyone’s business!” • 7 respondents said that their institution encouraged/ facilitated staff placements with employers – 3 were from the University of Nottingham

  4. What did they say about the benefits? • “It enhances teaching and industrial links for undergraduates and for research” • “Keep staff in touch with current industrial practice” • “...an important way to get our graduate employment up” • “Increasing placements available for students” • “Understanding labour market needs” • “...insights into real-life applications” of subject being taught

  5. ...and the challenges/ concerns? • Minimising impact of absence upon teaching schedule/ research/ colleagues • b) Concern that wouldn’t be able to offer anything to the host employer • No relevance to the Research Excellence Framework (REF) and therefore not an institutional priority • Grant makers look at publishing record and not at employer-linked activities • e) Losing staff to industry

  6. Other comments... “I personally left a lectureship because I was losing my industry links. A placement would have allowed me to stay in academia and maintained industry links without leaving....” “Although I enjoyed my industrial placement, it was very difficult to detach from my university job...” “Placements would be hugely beneficial as a form of CPD, but also to facilitate employer links to the mutual benefit of all...” “....could any scheme not just apply to academics but also academic related Careers staff...?” “The big issue will be encouraging engagement” “Very nice idea, but I cannot see why a member of staff would do so, given the negative impact it might have on their career”
