In 2014 the new National Curriculum becomes statutory. The aims of the maths curriculum are: • Fluency • Reason mathematically e.g. finding proof, generalising • Problem solving
What are we doing in school to encourage fluency? • Changed the number bonds scheme- 3 minutes to complete questions. Cannot progress until they have all the question correct. • Big Maths Tuesday- levelled mental maths tests • Every child has a differentiated mental maths book to work through for Early Morning Work
Expectations of the Maths Curriculum • Most concepts will be covered a year earlier than they currently are • Times tables will be expected to be learnt by Year 4 • New concepts such as Roman numerals, naming parts of a circle and a greater emphasis on algebra are included
Examples of games that can be played • Multiplication games- speed tables, counter games • Mathletics • Every day maths- adding number plates on cars, adding whilst in a supermarket etc.
What are we doing in school to promote problem solving and reasoning? • Homework once a term with a problem solving focus • Assessing problem solving pieces once a term, with a levelled outcome • Looking at planning and teaching through problem solving where possible • Maths week has a problem solving theme • Creating a classroom ethos where it is acceptable to make mistakes
Types of problem solving • Logic • Finding patterns and rules • Finding all possibilities • Diagram and visual problems
