  2. Speculative Fiction • Speculative fiction is closely related to, and sometimes includes, science fiction, fantasy and horror genres. Speculative fiction most often “speculates,” or imagines, what the future might be like, building on and extending (and often critiquing) what is happening in society today

  3. Utopia • a real or imagined society considered to be perfect or ideal. E.g., citizens of a utopia may be truly equal, free from war and conflict, without sickness, everyone able to seek and attain pleasure, etc.

  4. Dystopia • an imaginary society that is imperfect, often characterized by misery, squalor, oppression, disease, overcrowding, etc.

  5. Orwellian • This word comes directly from Orwell’s writing in 1984. It carries a negative connotation and refers to anything involving systematic controlling/monitoring of the individual. For example, the installation of security cameras at ACHS…

  6. Prediction • In your notebook, under the vocab., make a prediction what the novel 1984 might be about.
