  2. Wart Cause • Warts are caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) • There are over 100 strains of HPV • Several strains are responsible for various non-genital warts • HPV may be transmitted via objects as well as humans WartSmart.org

  3. Wart Prevalence & Epidemiology • Children ages 9-16 are at the highest risk of getting warts.1 • Peak age is 14.5 for boys and 13 for girls.2 • About 10% of children and adolescents have warts at any one time.1 • As many as 22% of children will contract warts during childhood.3 WartSmart.org

  4. Wart Types • 70% of wart occurrences are common warts (verruca vulgaris). They mostly appear on the hands.4 • Plantar warts (foot warts) are the second most common, affecting 4.5% of the population. These can be very painful since they mainly appear on the bottoms of the feet.3 WartSmart.org
