E N D
ECE 283 Digital Communication Systems • Course Description • Digital modulation techniques. Coding theory. Transmission over bandwidth constrained channels. Signal fading and multipath effects. Spread spectrum. Optical transmission techniques. Prerequisite: Electrical Engineering 281 or consent of instructor. Instructor: Brooke. 3 units. • Text: Digital Communications Fourth Edition, John G. Proakis, McGraw Hill
Grading: • The course will be graded based on reports from several experiment versus theory mini projects using Matlab for the experimental portion
Project Titles: • Project 1 (start in week 3) • Probability of Error and/or maximum data rate for Optimal Receivers and QAM modulation • Project 2 (start in week 6) • Effect of Error Correction codes on Probability of Error for baseband communication • Project 3 (start in week 9) • Effect of Equalization on Probability of Error for baseband communication • There will be an opportunity for students to suggest modifications or refinements to the projects to match their interests and backgrounds.
Outline • Transmitters (Chapters 3 and 4, Source Coding and Modulation) (week 1 and 2) • Receivers (Chapter 5) (week 3 and 4) • Received Signal Synchronization (Chapter 6) (week 5) • Channel Capacity (Chapter 7) (week 6) • Error Correction Codes (Chapter 8) (week 7 and 8) • Equalization (Bandwidth Constrained Channels) (Chapter 10) (week 9) • Adaptive Equalization (Chapter 11) (week 10 and 11) • Spread Spectrum (Chapter 13) (week 12) • Fading and multi path (Chapter 14) (week 12)
