HISTORY & BACKGROUND • Gained official city status and recognized as Bavaria’s capital in 1180 • At this time, Benedictine Order influenced Munich’s arts, culture, and politics • !930’s Nazi Occupation – Munich was centrefor extremist politics because it was the location National Socialists rose to power • 1945 onwards – experienced rapid growth following WWII, owing success to thriving economy driven by diverse set of sectors (i.e. information technology, biotechnology, publishing) • 1957 – reached 1 million-population mark • Strength of economy rooted in its ability to host diverse set of global players, vibrant SME’s and well-rounded labour force • Example of expanding networks: Silk Road – airfreight connecting Central China to Munich • Harness national and global companies that represent all sectors of its industries and businesses

Munich Creative Business Week (MCBW) February 7-12, an annual design event that promotes a contextual discourse in areas of concepts, innovation, and design. It serves as a platform to foster partnerships with people in creative and economic sectors from all around the world and to demonstrate the business potential of Bavaria. It allows for visitors, experts and creative workers from all around the world to participate and experience the world of design.
Kultfabrik: Culture Factory • With 90,000 m2 of hall space the site is one of the largest party venues in Europe • Situated on abandoned factory premises, the site has been transformed into a maze of bars, clubs, concert halls and cinemas • Fosters creativity through offering affordable spaces to alternative and sub-cultural initiatives
Messestadt Riem Messestadt Riemis an urban planning project that seeks to create a vibrant mixed-use green place to live and work It is to be completed in 2013 and create a total of 13,800 jobs 6,100 residential units and space for 14,000 people. it seeks to achieve the economic, social, spatial and regional development goals of the PERSPEKTIVE MÜNCHEN COMPACT URBAN GREEN
“Munich Mix” & “SoBoN” • Munich has a holistic vision of urban development that focuses on integrating the goals of economic prosperity, sustainability and social cohesion. • “Munich Mix” combines the two major objectives: 1. promoting Munich as a business hub and 2. addressing social issues and cohesion, primarily through programs aimed at housing, integration of foreign residents and education. • “SoBoN”—Soziale Bodennutzung (‘socially just land use’) requires private property owners to take on a share in the consequential costs of infrastructure that is granted through new construction rights by the city, as well as contribute to the financing of state-subsidized housing. • In Addition, the city set out to spend 625 million Euros on subsidized housing from 2007 to 2011.
Deutsche Bahn • Started in 1992 • Munich is named Radlhaupstadt – The Bicycle Capital • Cycling accounts for 14% of traffic • 1992-2010 – 32 million euros spent on new bike racks and investments in expanding the cycling network • Bicycle network = 1,200 + kilometers long (50% of total length of road network) • 2010: 25, 000 bicycle racks + 50,000 bicycle parking spaces
OKTOBERFEST • 16 day festival held in Munich • Largest Volksfest – People’s Fair in the world • Most important part of Bavarian culture – since 1810 • Most famous event in Germany and world’s largest fair -- 5 million + people annually • Large quantities of beer is consumed –7 million + litres in 2007 • 2010 marked the 200 year anniversary of Oktoberfest • Fun fact: Drunk patrons who pass out are called Bierleichen “Beer Corpses”
Munich Economic Summit • Initiative aimed at bringing together academic scholars and decision-makers in politics, industry and finance to discuss topics integral to the foundation of Europe • Began in 2002 and is held annually – each year focuses on different topics • Example of issues discussed: Challenges Europe faces in the World Economy; Europe and the Demographic Challenge – issues facing industrialized countries; how to harness crucial assets in the era of globalization – brains and talents • Sponsored by organizations that foster national and international dialogue between business, politics, and society to promote mutual understanding (i.e BMW Stiftung)
