Proposal for Introducing Clinical EOL Experiences to Medical Students Janelle Pflieger, MS-II Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine 07.30.04
Proposed Curriculum Changes • Current EOL curriculum is lacking at our school with respect to the MS-III and MS-IV students • To date there are few clinical opportunities established for upperclassmen to be introduced to hospice or palliative care
Goals • Establish a partnership with a Chicago area hospice • Introduce MS-IIIs to hospice by scheduling a one day shadowing experience with a hospice team member during their 12-week family medicine rotation • Develop a four week hospice elective for interested MS-IVs
Goals cont’d • Incorporate lecture material from AMSA fellowship into MS-IV elective • Evaluate each student’s experience to modify elective as needed • Encourage interested MS-Is and MS-IIs to volunteer with hospice patients and members of the hospice team
Details • I plan to start implementing my goals before school starts this September • I hope to work closely with the CCOM Family Medicine Department to incorporate EOL clinical experiences into our rotations • I anticipate the support of my mentor and dean, Dr. Karen Nichols, who is dedicated to EOL care
Thanks… …to all those who made this fellowship happen and for a great summer!
