So that other countries can learn from your experiences To leverage ongoing support in your country for malaria control efforts To generate, sustain, or increase support for halting malaria in the region Why have a plan for strategically sharing MIS results? RBM-MERG Malaria Indicator Training Workshop, 9th-12th September 2008, Lusaka, Zambia
Step 1: Form a dissemination team Team will develop the overall dissemination strategy, support spokespeople, be sensitive to protocol, etc. Good to include: • lead writer of the MIS report • communications expert • high-level malaria representative from the MoH RBM-MERG Malaria Indicator Training Workshop, 9th-12th September 2008, Lusaka, Zambia
Steps 2 & 3: Identify objectives and audiences • Identify communication goals and objectives (scale up leadership, partnerships, tools developed) • Audiences: global malaria community, leaders, media outlets • Note: The importance of reaching beneficiaries RBM-MERG Malaria Indicator Training Workshop, 9th-12th September 2008, Lusaka, Zambia
Step 4: Develop a dissemination strategy Outline appropriate activities to share results: • Announcement event • Identify event participants • Link to annual event, annual national planning, etc. • Plan your media outreach RBM-MERG Malaria Indicator Training Workshop, 9th-12th September 2008, Lusaka, Zambia
Step 4: Develop a dissemination strategy (continued) Sustain longer-term attention: • Partner meeting presentations • Presentations/posters at health conferences • Peer-reviewed journals RBM-MERG Malaria Indicator Training Workshop, 9th-12th September 2008, Lusaka, Zambia
Step 5: Develop key messages • Develop messages in a collaborative process • Distill survey findings, demonstrate impact • Be brief, positive and powerful, i.e., frame them to be easily understood by the target audience • Answer the “what’s next?” question RBM-MERG Malaria Indicator Training Workshop, 9th-12th September 2008, Lusaka, Zambia
Framing the message Message 1: Last year we sprayed in 15 districts in Zambia. This year we scaled up, introducing IRS to an additional 21 districts. Better: Zambia’s indoor spraying campaign now reaches 36 of Zambia’s 72 districts with plans to spray 1.1 million homes, protecting more than 6,000,000 Zambians. Message 2: Under-five mortality rates decreased overall by 29%, from 168/1,000 live births in 2002 to 119/1,000 live births in 2007. Better: Since 2002 child mortality rates in Zambia have decreased by nearly one-third—an estimated 75,000 child lives saved in the last five years.
