Telehealth & Telecare Projects Ian Wiebkin Kirklees Council 12th February 2009
The Projects - VirtEx & T-Seniority • Two major Telehealth/Telecare pilot projects: • VirtEx • 3 year project • Funded by the DTI • Aimed at allowing older citizens to stay independent for longer • Emphasis on social inclusion and Telecare, with some Telehealth monitoring • T-Seniority • 2 year project • Funded by the EU • Aimed at the older citizen with specific medical needs, trialling feedback on Telehealth monitoring
VirtEx • Project VirtEx • A consortium consisting of: • Tunstall (lead member) • DigiTV • Sheffield University • Housing 21 • FOLD • What will we pilot? • An Internet Protocol (IP) based TV service • Facilities to assist with social inclusion • More limited Telehealth monitoring information and ‘feedback’
Project VirtEx Update • VirtEx (Virtual Extra Care) • Requirements workshop identified some of the main problem areas: • Feeling of isolation and loneliness • Depression and mental illness • The project will take a pragmatic two phased approach and looking at piloting: • Links to Tunstall for Telehealth monitoring feedback • 2 way video conferencing • Calendar of ‘bookable’ events with reminders • Visual/sound based safety alerts • Understanding the pros and cons of different user interfaces • Also, photo galleries, video and radio on-demand, plug-ins to external content, event booking, simple games etc.
T-Seniority • T-Seniority Project • A consortium consisting of: • Idi Eikon (Spanish lead member) • UK (DigiTV) • Greece • France • Finland • Italy • What will we pilot? • An Internet Protocol (IP) based TV service • Telehealth monitoring ‘feedback’ • Surfacing PCT and other suppliers tools/systems/information
Project Update • T-Seniority • Also at a very early stage of the project • Initial pilot in Huddersfield • Aspirational scope includes: • Feedback on Telehealth device monitoring • NHS Choices plug-ins (News, Services Search, Live Well and Health A-Z) • NHS Expert Patient interface • National GP appointments plug-in for The Phoenix Partnership • Plug-in links to PCT tools, systems and information
What does this mean for you? • Development of advanced IP based technology for use in other applications (video streaming, video conferencing etc.) • New national plug-ins • Close links with major Telehealth and Telecare providers • Telehealth and Telecare ‘add-ons’ integrated within the current Starter Kit - a ‘one box solution’ • Sharing the outcomes where possible, getting feedback and suggestions from you using a new DigiTV forum
What else? • We will also be trialling the use of the Nintendo Wii to deliver services and care • This can provide an easier to use handheld pointing device and graphical user interface • But will older people like it?.....
