Unpacking Learning Targets I can cite evidence from the text when answering questions and discussing “Shrouded in Myth” I can use context clues to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words in “Shrouded in Myth” I can collaborate effectively with my peers I can express myself clearly in a group discussion

  3. Unfamiliar Vocabulary cite “quoting from text” evidence “proof” • Have you heard of these words in a different context (i.e. t.v, book, etc.)? • What about shrouded? “cloaked or covered in a mystery”

  4. Think, Pair, Share Based on the learning targets, what do you think your learning today will be?

  5. Things Close Readers Do • Get the gist of what the text is about. • Cite evidence. • Use context clues to figure out word meaning.

  6. WORKTIME Group Discussion Criteria Evidence Based Questions Using Context Clues

  7. Group Discussion Criteria When working in a group, what are important expectations that you should have for one another? • Discuss with triad & write 5 expectations you discussed • Agree on the most important one • Share out

  8. Question Baskets • Pull a question from the basket & read aloud to your triad. • On your own, think silently about the question. • Go back to the text & underline a place where you think you found evidence. • As a triad, discuss the answer & evidence you found.

  9. Remember…. • Use your annotated text, “Shrouded in Myth” as a reference to answer questions, find evidence, & in discussion with your triad. • Follow triad expectations.

  11. 1st Strategy to figure out unfamiliar words • Use “context clues” Think, Pair, Share: So, what are context clues?

  12. Context Clues “A long, long, long time ago, even before Perseus was born, his grandfather, Acrisios, the king of Argos, was given a prophecy that he would someday be killed by his grandson.” What are some clues in or around the word “prophecy” that help to determine the meaning?

  13. Practice (index cards) • Write the word prophecy on an index card. • On the back of the same index card, write the meaning. • Visualize the word in your mind. On the same side as the meaning, draw a picture of what you visualize.

  14. Practice (index cards) Repeat the process (in pairs): • Imprisoned • Stunning • Dreaded • writhing

  15. Share Find another pair and share your index cards.

  16. Reflecting on Learning Targets Reflect = think back on Read the 4 learning targets. • Think: Was I able to do these?

  17. Exit Ticket Exit Ticket = your ticket to “exit” the room. • Focus on the 1st 2 learning targets • Complete in 3 minutes

  18. Think, Pair, Share The Lightning Thief Examine the image on the cover… • What do you notice? • What do you wonder?

  19. Homework - due tomorrow Do a “first draft” read of Chapter 1, “I accidentally Vaporize My Pre-algebra Teacher” Purpose for reading: Get to know the main character, Percy Jackson. • What do you notice? • What do you wonder?
